So you’re standing on the scale (or squeezing into too tight jeans) feeling defeated, the same way you have felt for months or years. You hardly know where to begin, every diet failing you. You’re tired of trying. You’re tired of being tired of trying! Please allow me to suggest a different way.
Your self confidence is like a muscle, if you use it, it gets bigger. If it’s not worked, it atrophies. A couple examples: a guy who is out on a Friday night, by the third or fourth rejection, inside he’s about done for the night – he feels like he’s lost his mojo. A girl is out with her friends, all the guys seem to want to talk to her, she knows she’s wearing the best dress, the best look – whatever it is, she feels like she can take on the world. Success builds on itself. So how do we build success when it comes to fitness?
Simple: revise your goal into something that is not so nebulous; have a clear target. I realize that losing weight is a “number”, it is measurable, but is it really? Muscle is denser than fat so you could actually be gaining weight and losing fat. The scale could be lying to you since your body tone is improving. If you must, a good indicator is clothing tightness but I’m not really going to get into that here. I am talking about a CLEARER goal.
One of my subscribers just wrote to me and explained that she started the month doing 5 pushups and ended the month doing 20. This is exactly what I’m talking about. Your strength will gain fast, especially if you are just starting out. The volume of what you can do in a workout will surge as you stick to three times a week. You might start out doing 100 total reps in a workout but quickly you’ll get to 300. I believe this is where we should have our focus. These are concrete targets you can create for yourself and meet. Each time you meet them, you are feeding your self confidence. As you go, you’ll "feel” your body changing first, and then you will “see” it.
Crave strength (not to mention more energy)! Write down every workout you’ve done and every target you want to reach. You can have success each time you exercise rather than feel like a failure each day. Get off the scale, pick one dietary thing to focus on (my favorite is cutting sugar and artificial sweeteners), and start grinding out those goals! Message me if you want some help!
Getting strong together,
Brian
